Open Foris: free software for environmental monitoring

Logo Open Foris

Open Foris is a set of free, open source software that makes it easy to collect, analyze and report data in a flexible and efficient manner. Government, research institutions and NGOs use these tools for a wide range of monitoring objectives, such as:

  • Forest inventories
  • Climate Change Reports
  • Socio-economic surveys
  • The assessment of biodiversity
  • The evolution of land use
  • Monitoring of deforestation by remote sensing
  • The detection of desertification outside the forest
Open Foris allows easy and flexible data collection and management. This collection can be performed from a smartphone, data validation is, moreover, intuitive.
An innovative land-based assessment using satellite imagery is available free of charge, as well as an efficient and collaborative data layer analysis that enables dissemination of results, including the Geospatial Toolkit

The initiative is a collaborative effort of many public and private institutions and is hosted by the FAO Forestry Department.
