Association Internationale des Forêts Méditerranéennes

This article is based on a video shared by the UN Environment Programme on one of the Restoration Flagship initiatives.

The Importance of Forest Restoration After Wildfires

The REstore video discusses the importance of forest restoration after wildfires and the challenges of mitigating wildfire risk in the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean with its specific climate is being increasingly affected by wildfires. The Forest Fire Emergency and Salvage (FES) program was designed to restore forests after wildfires. The Mediterranean region is known to be the second largest hotspot of biodiversity in the world, but unfortunately, this region is very vulnerable to climate change.

The Work of the Association for Forest Development and Conservation (AFDC)

The video highlights the work of the Association for Forest Development and Conservation (AFDC) in Lebanon. AFDC is an NGO that works on forest fire prevention, firefighting and postfire restoration. They point out that while water is traditionally seen as the solution to extinguishing fires, there are other techniques that can be used. AFDC believes that preventing fires is more important than fighting them.

The Importance of Planting Native Species

The article also discusses the importance of planting a variety of native species after a fire. AFDC owns and manages the biggest native tree nurseries in Lebanon. The nurseries create local jobs and contribute to the local economy. The AFDC project has inspired new businesses and new work in the community.

The article concludes by mentioning that AFDC has restored 2 million hectares of land out of the 8 million pledged to be restored by 2030. The restoration activities take into account the communities, the partners, and the ecosystem.
