The RENFORCE project (Resilience ENhancing to adapt FORests to Climate change Effects) is part of the Interreg Euro-MED programme. Its ambition is to prepare Mediterranean forests to face the impacts of climate change—particularly large-scale wildfires and storms—through proactive, integrated management.

CONTEXT

Mediterranean forests are increasingly exposed to cross-border disturbances. The risks of wildfires and storms are on the rise, aggravated by global warming. To date, forest management has often been reactive; RENFORCE proposes shifting towards a preventive approach, based on climate adaptation and cooperation among stakeholders.

OBJECTIVES

    • Identify, test, and promote innovative approaches for the prevention and management of natural hazards.

    • Integrate fire and storm risks into forest planning.

    • Encourage inter-institutional cooperation and citizen engagement.

    • Maintain the health and resilience of forest ecosystems.

PARTNERSHIP

The project brings together 8 institutions from 6 Mediterranean countries.
AIFM’s role:

  • Leader for defining pilot actions and monitoring the project’s carbon footprint.

  • Active partner in developing the common prevention strategy and disseminating results.

Action Plan

The project is structured around three main components:

  1. Common prevention strategy – analysis of best practices, collection of data on forest management, and drafting of a shared strategy.

  2. Pilot actions – joint definition of interventions, testing mechanised forest operations, short supply chain models for local use of materials, and predictive modelling of wind damage.

  3. Capitalisation – drafting policy briefs for decision-makers, dissemination to stakeholders, monitoring the project’s carbon footprint, and coordination with other Euro-MED projects.
